Today, the CDC announced another jump in the occurrence of kids diagnosed somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. When we started this journey 6 years ago, the numbers were like 1 in every 250. Now, 1 in every 88 children fall somewhere on the spectrum. With boys, the figure is even higher....1 in every 54 boys. So what is causing the increase....who knows...
I'll tell you who......AN ASPIE KID!
Someday this disorder or disease or whatever you want to call it will be deciphered...BY AN ASPIE KID! Our middle son often verbalizes how "he knows the answer is in his brain...it just takes the wrong path." THEY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON!
Tonight, he told me that he wanted to "make a memory." We use this term often in reference to creating memories of wonderful family functions or a great time....but he said, "no Mom...not one of those memories....a memory of what someone says." There it is, proof of a perception or understanding that he DOES NOT necessarily remember what is told to him...he must read it, experience it, see it, touch it, etc. As per his test scores, high intelligence..slow oral/aural processing. AND HE KNOWS.
Chances are an ASPIE KID will discover the chromosomal dysfunction that is the marker for ASD...an ASPIE KID will discover the environmental "trigger" that kicks the marker into high gear...an ASPIE KID will discover new treatments or learning styles/environments that open the doors to their ability...and an ASPIE KID will find a cure! Of course, it will all take place in his bedroom when & where no one will know about it.....and he will probably not TELL anyone.
Meanwhile, Congress and the CDC will STILL only allot 1% of the research budget on ASD......
