Idioms

I know that Aspie kids have trouble with idioms due to the fact that they take things so literally. Their understandings of these idioms can be hilarious, at times. Many of the "Humorous Sayings" on the side of this page come from instances when one of my Aspie boys did not understand an idiom. Well, lately, our middle son has been working on recognizing idioms.....like,
"Mom, when you say that I am SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS.....is that an idiom?"
Or when one asks, "ARE WE ON THE SAME PAGE" and he turns the page to see if he was on the right page.
I am proud of the work he is doing. He at least recognizes the language can be confusing and is trying to learn the linguistic pathways of our society so that he can communicate at a higher level.

Well, I had thought that our older Aspie son "HAD A HANDLE" on idioms. He is very gifted in English and has not had the same trouble with language as our middle son has had. But, last night, at the dinner table, he announced that he had something important to say.
With great drama, he proclaimed that I sometimes say silly things to get a point across! Now, if that isn't a good definition of idioms...."I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS"....
Wow, what a discovery! "STOP THE PRESSES!" "RISE AND SHINE" son....you got it.
I guess he just has a "SIXTH SENSE" about these things.
To "MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT," I think he would have liked to tell us, as we were laughing, to "PUT A SOCK IN IT" because he could "SMELL A RAT" but he didn't get that we were "PULLING HIS LEG."
I guess a good "RULE OF THUMB" is that "YOU CAN'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER." Even when you think an Aspie kid "GETS IT"....he may not.

Sorry this post has been so "TONGUE IN CHEEK....."
